Garlic is an ancient, trans-cultural food-and-medicine and one of today's best-selling botanical supplements — but it is no natural cure-all for blood pressure, cholesterol, or infection. 1. Names and origins: 'hu,' 'foreign garlic,' and Zhang Qian's western journey

It must be stressed: in tradition garlic is more a food-therapy and external-treatment item; its internal 'drug nature' records and the modern use of garlic as a 'blood-pressure/cholesterol supplement' belong to two different contexts. Treating folk food-therapy experience directly as modern efficacy evidence is a common error.

4. How understanding evolved: from 'dispelling the noxious' to food-therapy wisdom

Across the centuries, views of garlic balanced 'the benefit of its pungency' against 'the harm of its acridity.'
